HP Designjet T795 Review

The Designjet T795 is HP's entry level six colour A0 CAD Printer this gives users whom require quick  Black and White output (as well as colour) of construction or engineering drawings a distinct advantage over the lower priced T520.

The six colour ink set includes a Matte Black Dye ink which can deliver ultra thin lines and fine text, a pure Grey which is ideal where grey shading is being used, particularly with construction drawings where you would be high-lighting a slab for instance, in addition to a pigment black that gives you a deeper black.

The above ink offering delivers a lower cost per ML of ink used, your not mixing colours to get a grey it can be for the most part delivered directly, this combined with much bigger ink tanks than on the T520 keeps your running cost low.

Wi-Fi is standard on the T520 which maybe an advantage for some users, where the T795 is LAN and USB with no Wi-Fi option, however, due to the size of some plots a direct connection is sometimes preferred (The T520 also comes with USB and LAN)

The T520 36-in ePrinter is a true A0 plotter where the Designjet T795 is 44-in and therefore can provide oversized drawings, this ideal for user's whom run GIS software such as Kingdom Seismic for instance, where often a wider width print is required. The smaller width on the Designjet T520 does give it a smaller more compact footprint so if your tight on space this should be considered. If you're upgrading from an HP Designjet 500 510 or 800 bare in mind these are 42-in machines and if your used to printing wider drawings then the T795 should be your choice.

Finally the T795 at launch does offer users the ability to buy upfront or add an optional postcript driver, this is useful when your volume spikes as you submit multiple PDF drawings for printing without having to open them, it is also of course useful for MAC users although the T520 does have an OSX driver as standard, as does the T795 - the postscript upgrade does make processing a lot more seamless though.

Our Opinion - We believe that the HP Designjet T795 is the better investment running cost are lower, it is more efficent with ink and arguably it provides a better colour gammut with higher quality output. It is also a much more solid and robust machine and we suspect that from an investment view point that you would achieve an additional 1-2 years life from it than a T520.
